(In the Name of God, the Most Gracious, Most Merciful)
By the morning dawn,
And by the ten nights of the Dhul-Hijjah,
And, by the even days, as well as the odd ones,
And, by the night when it passes,
Is there not Signs in that for People of Understanding?
Have you not considered how your Sovereign Lord dealt
With ‘Aad and the DisBelieving people,
The likes of whom We have not seen before.
And, with Thamud, who carved homes into the rock cliffs
to hide from the wrath of God?
And, Pharaoh too,
all of whom oppressed others throughout the land,
and caused corruption and mischief.
So, your Sovereign Lord brought punishment against them.
Indeed, your Sovereign Lord watches over all things.
And, as for mankind, when his Sovereign Lord tries him,
and is then generous and favors him, he says
arrogantly, “My Sovereign Lord has favored me.”
But, when His Sovereign Lord tries him, and removes some from his provisions,
mankind says, “My Sovereign Lord has humiliated me.”
No, this is not so! He tries people through both prosperity and hardship alike,
And He blesses people who are not only gracious in times of favor,
but who are patient in adversity.
But, you do not help the orphan,
and, you do not encourage others to feed the needy.
And, you devour your inheritance in both lawful and unlawful ways,
and you love wealth immensely.
No! In the future, when the earth has fulfilled its term,
and your Sovereign Lord and the angels have come to judge mankind,
Hellfire will be brought into view on that Day.
On that Day mankind will remember God,
but will that remembrance avail him then?
He will say, “I wish I had done some good in life.”
So, on that Day, none will punish as He does,
nor will any bind the evildoers’ magic so tightly as God does.
To the Righteous on earth, it will be said, “O soul, be reassured,
you will be returned to your Sovereign Lord, and
you are well pleased with Him, as He is with you.
And, be among My Righteous Servants,
and enter Paradise.”
