A Translation that includes The Last Sermon
Surah 10 Yunus
Surah 10 Yunus
Alif, Lam, Ra.
Mankind is amazed that God Revealed Inspiration to a man from among themselves,
Saying, “Warn mankind, and give good tidings to the Believers so that they will have a precedence of honor before their Lord God."
But, the Unbelievers say, "This is indeed an evident sorcerer!"
Verily, your Lord is God, who created the heavens and the earth in six days, and is firmly established on the throne of authority, arranging the matter of all things. No intercessor can plead with Him except by His leave. That is Allah, your Lord God; so worship him.
Will you not remember to do so?
To Him will be your return - all of you. The promise of God is the Truth. It is He who begins the process of creation, and repeats it. And, so He rewards with justice those who Believe and work righteously. But, those who reject Him will have draughts of boiling waters, and a grievous punishment in Hellfire, because they did reject Him.
It is He who made the sun to be a shining glory, and the moon to be a light of beauty, and measured out stages for her; that you might know the number of years and the count of time. God did not create this, but in Truth.
Thus, He explained His Signs in detail, for those who Understand.
Indeed, in the alternation of the night and the day, and in all that God has created, in the heavens and the earth, are Signs for those who fear Him.
Those who do not rest their hope on their meeting with God, but are pleased and satisfied with the life of the present, and those who do not heed Our Signs, their abode is the Fire, because of the evil they earned.
Those who Believe, and work righteously, their Lord God will Guide them because of their Faith. Beneath them will flow rivers in The Gardens of Bliss.
This will be their cry therein: "Glory to Thee, O Allah."
And, "Peace" will be their greeting therein! And, the end of their cry will be,
"Praise be to God, the Cherisher and Sustainer of all the worlds!"
If God were to hasten for people the evil they have created, as He hastens for them the good, then their term would be ended for them.
But, the angels leave those who rest not their hope on their meeting with God,
in their trespasses, wandering blindly.
When trouble touches a man, He cries unto God lying down on his side, or sitting, or standing. But, when He has solved their troubles, he goes about on his way as if he had never cried unto Him for the troubles that were bothering him!
Thus, do the deeds of sinners seem fair in their own eyes!
Generations before you, God destroyed civilizations when they did wrong.
Their Messengers came to them with Clear Signs, but they still would not Believe!
Thus, does God punish those who sin!
Then, He made you heirs in the land after them, to see how you would behave!
But, when Clear Signs are recited unto them, those who rest not their hope on their meeting with Allah, Say, "Bring us a reading other than this, or change this,"
Say to them, "It is not for me, of my own accord, to change it. I do not follow but what is Revealed unto me. If I were to disobey my Lord,
I should myself fear the penalty of a Great Day to come."
Say to them, "If God had so willed, I should not have recited it to you, nor would He have made it known to you. A whole lifetime before this have I remained among you.
Will you not then Understand?"
Who does more wrong than as to forge a lie against God, or deny His Signs?
But, never will those who sin prosper.
They worship deities other than God, things that hurt them, and they do not profit them. And, they say, "These are our intercessors, rather than God."
Say to them, "Do you indeed inform God of something He does not Know, in the heavens or on earth? No, Glory belongs to Him alone!
And, Exalted is God above those they may associate with Him!"
Mankind was but one religion, but then splintered later. Had it not been for a Word that went forth before from your Lord earlier, their differences would have been settled between them.
They say, "Why isn't a Sign sent down to him from his Lord?" Say to them,
"The Unseen is only for God to know, so wait, for I am also among those who wait."
When God gave mankind a taste of Mercy after adversity had touched them, behold!
They took to plotting against His Signs!
Say to them, "God is the Best of Planners."
Indeed, His Messengers record all the plots that you make!
He it is who enables you to travel through land and sea; so that you may board ships. They sail with a favorable wind, and they rejoice therein. Then, comes a stormy wind and the waves come to them from all sides, and they think they are being overwhelmed. They cry unto Allah, sincerely offering their plea unto Him saying, "If You will deliver us from this,
we shall truly show our gratitude!"
But, when He delivers them from harm, behold!
They transgress overbearingly throughout the earth in defiance of right! O Mankind! Your rude overberaringness over others is against your own souls, and only a habit of the life of the present. In the end, to Allah is your return, and the angels
will show you the Truth of all that you did.
The example of this worldly life is like the rain which God descends down from the skies. By its mingling, arises the produce of the earth - which provides sustenance for people and animals alike. It grows until the earth is clad with its golden ornaments and is adorned in beauty. The people to whom it belongs think they have all powers of disposal over it,
but, in reality, they do not.
God's command reaches all by night and day, and He makes it as a harvest just gathered, as if it had not flourished only yesterday!
Thus, does Allah explain the Signs in detail for those who reflect on them.
And, Allah invites to the Home of Peace, and Guides whom He pleases onto a Straight Path.
To those who do Right is the best reward, and even more in measure!
No Darkness, nor shame, shall cover their faces!
They are Companions of the Garden; and they will abide therein eternally!
But, those who have earned evil will have a reward of equal evil, and shame will cover their faces. No defender will they have from the wrath of God. Their faces will be covered, as it were, with pieces from the depth of the Darkness of night.
They are Companions of the Fire. They will abide therein for eternity!
One day, God shall gather them all together. Then, the angels will say to those who associated gods with Allah: "To your place! You and those you associated with as partners with God, and they will separate them.
And their "partners" shall say, "It was not us that you worshipped!
"Enough for us is God as a witness between us and you.
We certainly knew nothing of your worship of us!"
There, every soul will prove the fruits of the deeds it had done in life.
They will be brought back to God, their Rightful Sovereign Lord,
and their invented lies will leave them nowhere.
Say to them, "Who is it that sustains you in life from the sky and from the earth? And, who is it that has power over hearing and sight? And, who is it that brings out the living from the dead, and the dead from the living? And, who is it that rules and governs all affairs?"
They will soon say, "God". Say to them, "Will you not then show respect and piety to Him?"
Such is God, your true Cherisher and Sustainer.
Apart from the Truth, what remains but error?
Why then are you turned away?
Thus, is the Word of your Lord proved True against those who rebel.
Indeed, they will not Believe.
Say to them, "Of your 'partners', are they able to make creation begin, and then repeat it? It is God who begins creation and repeats it. Then, how are you deluded away from the Truth?"
Say to the DisBelievers, "Of your 'partners' is there any that can give any guidance towards the Truth? It is God who gives Guidance towards the Truth.
Isn't then He who gives Guidance to The Truth more worthy to be followed,
or he who finds no guidance himself unless he himself is Guided?
What then is the matter with you? How is that you judge Him so unjustly?"
But, most of them follow nothing but their own fantasies. Truly, fantasies can be of no avail against The Truth. Indeed, God is well aware of all that they do.
This Qur'an is produced by none other than Allah. It is a confirmation of Revelations that went before it, and a fuller explanation of the Book - wherein there is no doubt - from the Sovereign Lord of all the worlds.
Or, do they say, "He forged it"? Say to them, "Bring then a Surah of equal merit, and call to your assistance anyone you can besides God, if it is the Truth you speak."
No, they denied those whose Knowledge they cannot Understand, and whose interpretation has not yet reached them. Thus, did those before them deny the same.
Then, observe what was the end of the wrongdoers!
Of the people there are some who Believe, and some who do not.
And, thy Lord knows best those who are out to corrupt others.
If they deny you O, Prophet Muhammad, say to them,
"My deeds are for me, and for you are yours!
You are free from responsibility for what I do, and I for what you do!
For our deeds are our own."
Among them, there are some who pretend to listen to you. But, can you make those who don’t listen to comprehend The Truth, even though they are devoid of reason and Understanding?
And, among them are some who look at you.
But, can you Guide those who are UnSeeing to The Truth, even though they cannot See?
Indeed, God will not deal unjustly with mankind.
It is a person who wrongs his own soul.
One day, He will gather them all together. It will be as if they had not been there but an hour of a day. They will recognize each other. Assuredly, those who will be Lost are the very people who denied the meeting with God, and refused to receive True Guidance.
Whether God shows you some part of what is promised them, or whether He shows your soul Mercy. In either case, to Allah is their return. Ultimately, Allah is witness to all that they do.
To every people was sent a Messenger. When their Messenger comes before them, the matter will be judged between them with justice. And, they will not be wronged.
They say, "When will this promise come to pass, if you speak the Truth?"
Say to them, "I have no power over any harm or benefit to myself, except as God Wills.
To every people is an appointed term. When their term is reached, not an hour can they cause delay, nor an hour can they move it forward, in anticipation."
Say to the DisBelievers, "Have you considered if God's punishment will come to
you by night, or by day? And, what portion of it would the sinners will to hasten?"
Would you then Believe in The Truth at last, when it actually comes to pass?
It will then be said, "Ah! Now? And you wanted before to bring it on!"
At length it will be said to the wrongdoers, "Taste of the enduring punishment!
You will receive the reward of what you earned in life!'"
They seek to be informed by you, "Is that true?" Say to them, "Yes! By my Lord God,
it is The Truth! And, you cannot stop it!"
Every soul that has sinned, if it possessed all that is on earth, it might try to give the possessions in ransom for their deeds. However, they would surely declare their repentance when they see the punishment for doing so. But, the Judgment between them will be with Justice, and no wrong will be done unto them if they are so deserving,
as Allah is the Most Merciful of the Merciful.
Is it not the case that to God belongs whatever is in the heavens and on earth?
And, is it not the case that God’s promise is assuredly True?
Yet, most of them do not Understand.
It is He who gives life, and after a term rescinds it, and to Him you all shall be returned.
O Mankind! There has come to you a Guidance from your Lord, and a healing for the illness that is in your hearts. And, for those who Believe, Guidance and Mercy.
Say to them, "In the bounty of God, and in His Mercy, in that let them rejoice!"
That is better than the wealth they hoard in life.
Say to them, "See what things Allah has sent down to you for sustenance? Yet, you hold forbidden some things unlawful, and some things lawful. Has God permitted you to do so,
or do you invent things to attribute to Allah?"
And, what do those people think who invent lies against God, and of the Day of Judgment? Indeed, Allah is full of Bounty to mankind, but yet, most of them still are not grateful to Him.
In whatever business you may be in, and whatever verses you may be reciting from the Qur'an, and whatever deed you may be doing, the angels are witnesses thereof,
when you are deeply engrossed therein.
Nor, is hidden from your Lord God
not so much as the weight of an atom on the earth or in heaven.
And not the least, and not the greatest of these things, but are recorded in a Clear Record.
Behold! Indeed, for the friends of God there is no fear, nor shall they grieve;
those who Believe and are constantly guarding against evil;
for them are glad tidings, in the life of the present and in the Hereafter.
No change can there be in the Words of Allah. This is indeed the supreme happiness.
Do not let their speech grieve you for all Power and Honor belong to God.
For, it is He Who Hears and Knows all things.
Behold! Indeed, to God belong all creatures, in the heavens and on earth.
What do they follow who worship as His "partners" other than God?
They follow nothing but fantasies, and they do nothing but lie.
It is God that has made you the night so that you may rest therein, and the day to make things visible to you. Indeed, in this are Signs for those who listen to His Message.
They say, "God has begotten a son!" Glory be to him! He is self-sufficient!
His are all things in the heavens and on earth!"
No warrant have you for this! Why do you say about God what you do not Know?
Say to them, "Those who invent a lie against God will never prosper."
A little enjoyment in this world! And then, to God will be their return, then shall He make them taste the severest punishment for their disrepect for Him.
Relate to them the story of Noah. Behold! He said to his people, "O my people. I do not want it to be hard on you that I should stay and commemorate the Signs of Allah.
I put my Trust in God alone. Make an agreement then about your plan, and among your partners you call upon, your plan is obscure and Dark. Then, pass your sentence on me, and give me no relief from my pain.
"But, if you turn back, no reward have I asked of you. My reward is only due from Allah, and I have been commanded to be of those who submit to God’s Will."
They rejected Him, but the angels delivered him, and those with him in the Ark, and God made them inherit the earth, while others were overwhelmed in the flood, those who rejected God's Signs. Then, see what was the end of those who were warned,
but did not heed the Signs!
Then, after him, God sent many Messengers to the civilizations after them. They brought them Clear Signs, but they would not Believe in what they had already rejected beforehand. Thus, does God seal the hearts of the sinners.
Then, after them, God sent Moses, and Aaron to Pharaoh and his chiefs, with God's Signs. But, they were arrogant. They were a people in sin.
When the Truth did come to them from Allah, they said, "This is indeed evident sorcery!"
Moses said, "How can you say that about the Truth when it has reached you.
Is sorcery like this? But, sorcerers will not prosper."
They said, " Have you come to us to turn us away from the religion of our fathers, in order that you and your brother will find grandeur from it? Why should we believe you?"
Pharaoh said, "Bring me then every well versed sorcerer."
When the sorcerers came, Moses said to them, "Throw what spell you wish to throw!"
When they cast the spell, Moses said, "What you have brought is sorcery. God will surely make it have no effect. For, God does not allow those to prosper who make mischief."
And, God, by His Words does proved and establish His Truth, however much
the sinners may hate it!
But, none believed in Moses except some children of his people, because of the fear of Pharaoh and his chiefs, less they should persecute them; and certainly Pharaoh was mighty on the earth and one who transgressed all bounds.
Moses said, "O my people! If you do truly Believe in God, then in Him put your trust,
and submit your will to His."
They said, "In God do we put our trust. Our Lord God! Do not give us a trial for those who practice oppression; and, deliver us Lord by Your Mercy from those who reject You."
Thus, did God inspire Moses and his brother with this Message: "Provide dwellings for your people in Egypt, make your dwellings into places of worship, and establish regular prayers. And, give glad tidings to those who Believe!"
Moses prayed, "Our Lord! You have indeed bestowed on Pharaoh and his chiefs splendor and wealth in the life of the present. And so, our Lord, they mislead people from Your Path. Obliterate their wealth, and send hardness to their hearts, because they will not Believe until they see the grievous punishment."
God said, "Accepted is your prayer, O Moses, and Aaron! So remain on the Straight Path, and do not follow the path of those who do not Know The Truth."
We took the emigrants of Israel across the sea. Pharaoh and his hosts followed them in dread and spite. At length, God overwhelmed them with the flood.
Pharaoh then said, "I Believe that there is no god except God whom the people of Israel Believe in. I am of those who now submit to God in Islam."
It was said to him, "Ah now! But a little while before, you were in rebellion against The Truth. And, you did mischief and violence!"
"This day God shall save you, that you may be a Sign to those who come after you! But, indeed, many among mankind are those who are heedless of God's Signs!"
We settled the emigrants of Israel in a beautiful dwelling place, and provided for them the finest sustenance. It was after Knowledge had been granted to them, that they fell into schisms. Indeed, God will judge between them as to the divisions between them,
on the Day of Judgment.
If you were in doubt as to what God has Revealed unto you, then ask those who have been reading the Book from before you. The Truth has indeed come to you from your Lord God, so never be among those who doubt the Truth.
Nor, be of those who reject the Signs of God,
or you shall be of those who perish without Faith.
Those against whom the Word of your Lord God has been verified would not Believe-
even if every Sign was brought to them,
until they saw for themselves the grievous punishment.
Why was there not a single town among those who were warned, who Believed, so their Faith would have profited them, except the people of Jonah?
When they Believed, God removed from them the punishment of disgrace in the present life, and permitted them to enjoy their life for a set term.
If it had been your Lord's Will, they all would have Believed, everyone on earth! Will you then compel mankind, against their will to Believe in Him!
No soul can Believe, except by the Will of God, and He will place doubt or obscurity on those who will not Understand.
Say to them, "Behold all that is in the heavens and on earth."
But, neither Signs, nor Warners, profit those who do not Believe.
Do they then expect anything but what happened in the days of the people who passed away before them? Say, "Wait then. For I, too, will wait with you."
In the End, God will deliver the Messengers and those who Believe.
Thus, is it fitting on His part that He will deliver those who Believe in Him!
Say to them, "O you people! If you are in doubt as to my religion, behold! I do not worship what you worship, other than God. But, I worship God - who will take your souls at death.
I am commanded to be in the ranks of the Believers. And, further, set your face towards religion with true piety, and never be of those who are the Unbelievers;
nor call on any other deity, other than God. Said being will neither profit you, nor hurt you.
If you do, behold! You shall certainly be of those who do wrong.”
If God does touch you with hurt, there is none who can remove it but He. If He designs some benefit for you, there is none who can keep back His favor. He causes it to reach whomsoever of His servants He pleases. And, Allah is the Most Forgiving, Most Merciful.
Say: "O Mankind! Now, The Truth has reached you from your Lord God! Those who receive Guidance, do so for the good of their own souls. And, those who go astray, do so at their own loss. And, I am not put over you to arrange your affairs."
Follow the Revelation sent unto you, and be patient until God does come to judge you.
And, He is the Fairest and Most Just of Judges.
Amen
